WASHINGTON — The roofing product company that advertises that “your roofing system will last forever” is actually touting a product made in Mexico, according to a brochure produced by the company.
The brochure from Roofing Products, Inc., says it has been selling its roofing tiles in the U.S. for more than a decade and claims its tiles are “made in the United States” but it has “many of the same attributes and properties as imported tile roofing.”
It also says that the tiles are made in “a highly efficient process” and “use recycled, natural materials and materials made from recycled materials.”
Rooftop tiles are manufactured from recycled material, recycled lumber, and other natural materials.
The tiles are also recyclable, the company says, and are manufactured using recycled lumber.
The U.K.-based company says its tiles “are not manufactured in the country of origin and do not require a certificate of origin, certifying that they are made locally.”
The brochure does not state the origin of the tile.
The company says it also uses “sustainable and environmentally-friendly materials,” and says its product “is safe for use on buildings, roofs and decks.”ROOFTOP TILES’ ‘SILICON VALLEY’ STYLEThe brochures description of its products says they “can be used in a variety of applications, including decks, roof decks, decks on balconies, roof tiles, and as roofing panels on roofs.”
The brochured tile roofs do not come in a standard “blue” or “green” color, but they do come in the “satin gray” and the “white” colors.
The brochures says the tiles can be used on a variety “sides of roofs.”
Rear Admiral Peter Chiarelli, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has been pushing for more use of U.M. products for the U of M’s athletic program.
He has said the school has been forced to import “expensive” and unsafe roofing materials.
The Associated Press has reached out to the company for comment.
